Hi guys.
Apologies for the late response, I've been trying to post a reply in the thread but keep being told I don't have authorisation hence Sam posting this for me.
I came across this move when I was thinking about through wraps and decided I wanted to do through wraps with same
direction Poi. Given that I was trying to keep the
timing symmetrical and a nice
flow to the move this is what I discovered. Having not been able to come up with a more suitable name at the time (not really understanding what was happening fully) I stuck with what I had been aiming for in the first place.
Since then I've bumped into people who said it was more like half
Snakes (club move)
Quicklink-ID: 2736
but let's start to break down the move and look at what's actually happening. Right, so what is a through
wrap. Well it seems to me that there are two main factors from looking at
video 3043. The
Poi wrap around the shoulder/upper arm (hence the
wrap part) and the crossing from front to back and vice versa (or through part) is manipulated and controlled by your shoulders. i.e. the shoulders become the pivot point of the circle.
Looking at what I have done it obvious that the first part of this definition is not being adheard to as the
Poi are not wrapping around my arm, however, I would encourage you to go and play with some through wraps in all there variations and see if you can make each one of them
wrap. The second part is definitely happening though. As the
Poi come into my body my arms are folded at the elbow leaving the pivot point at my shoulders which control the movement from in front to behind.
There is, however, one more thing happening in this move which probably arrived through muscle memory or what felt natural. There is a certain amount of
isolation that happens as the
Poi circle from in front to behind and vice versa. This felt much nicer than locking my hand against my shoulder and allowed the move to be more fluid. The
Poi isolate with the shoulder as the centre point/point of
isolation meaning that the pivot point controlled by your shoulder is not a solid object like the handle of the
Poi but a virtual point of isolation...
...
... Well that all sounds far more complicated than it actually is. Unfortunately I'm no closer now than I was last year to coming up with an appropriate name for it. Technically it's something like same
direction Poi in
split time rhythm doing
same time shoulder reels with
isolation but that wouldn't fit in the title bar. I am open to suggestions for naming this move and would be happy to change it on the site if we could come to some agreement as to what it is.
Thanks for watching
G.
